  • 1 tbsp Vegetable Oil Olive oil can be used as a substitute
  • 3.5 cups Bread Flour All-purpose flour can be substituted, but results will be less chewy
  • 1 tsp Salt Replace with kosher salt if necessary
  • 1.5 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese Shredded, can use Monterey Jack or asiago
  • 1 egg Egg Wash Beaten with 1 tsp water

Preparation Steps
  1. Prepare the yeast by dissolving 1 tsp of sugar in 1 cup of warm water, sprinkle yeast, and let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Mix the dough with the yeast mixture, eggs, vegetable oil, sugar, salt, and bread flour until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the dough rise in a lightly oiled bowl for 1 to 1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the bagels, dividing dough into 12 equal portions, and form into circles.
  6. Boil bagels in 16 cups of water with 1.5 tbsp of sugar for 2 minutes, flipping halfway.
  7. Preheat oven to 400°F, brush bagels with egg wash, and add cheese before baking.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool on a rack before serving.
