  • 2 tablespoons Honey Maple syrup can be a delightful swap.
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster sauce Omit for a vegetarian version.
  • 2 tablespoons Rice vinegar Apple cider vinegar works as a substitute.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Fresh garlic enhances flavor; garlic powder is an alternative.
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder Use a mix of cinnamon, star anise, and cloves if needed.
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame oil Swap with a neutral oil if preferred.

Equipment

  • oven
  • mixing bowl
  • Resealable Plastic Bag
  • baking sheet

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil.
  3. Transfer the chicken thighs into a resealable plastic bag and pour half of the prepared marinade over them. Seal the bag tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  4. Store the remaining marinade in the fridge.
  5. Remove the marinated chicken from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  6. Arrange the marinated chicken thighs on a lined baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C).
  7. Pour the reserved marinade into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  8. Brush the cooked chicken with the thickened marinade and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  9. Let the Char Siu Chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
