Ingredients

For the Steak
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil Can substitute with canola or avocado oil.
  • 1 pound Sirloin or NY Strip Steak Ribeye is a great alternative.
For the Vegetables
  • 8 ounces White Mushrooms Sliced; shiitake or cremini mushrooms can be used.
  • 1 large Onion Sliced; yellow or red onions work beautifully.
  • 2 Zucchini Cut into 1/2-inch sticks; bell peppers are a tasty exchange.
For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce Opt for low-sodium if desired.
  • 1 tablespoon Mirin Use a mix of water and sugar for a non-alcoholic version.
  • 1 teaspoon Honey Maple syrup is a fantastic substitute.
For Extra Flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame Oil Optional but highly recommended.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Use olive oil for a dairy-free alternative.
  • 4 cloves Garlic Minced; garlic powder works if you're short on fresh.
  • Salt and Pepper Adjust according to taste.
For Garnish
  • Sesame Seeds Optional.
  • Green Onions Optional.

Equipment

  • large skillet

Method

Prep and Cook
  1. Pat the steak dry, season with salt and pepper, and heat vegetable oil in a skillet. Sear the steak for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned. Let it rest.
  2. In the same skillet, add more oil and sesame oil, then sauté mushrooms and onion for 4-5 minutes. Add zucchini and cook for 2-3 more minutes.
  3. Slide vegetables to the side, melt butter in the cleared area, then add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds.
  4. Whisk together soy sauce, mirin, and honey in a bowl, then pour it into the skillet with vegetables. Let it simmer to meld flavors.
  5. Slice the rested steak, add it to the skillet, and stir to coat in sauce. Simmer for another 1-2 minutes until heated through.
  6. Transfer to a serving platter, garnish with sesame seeds and green onions, and serve hot.
