  • 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning mix of dried basil and oregano works too
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste or ketchup as a substitute
  • 2 tablespoons Flour use gluten-free flour if needed
  • 1 cup Beef Broth vegetable broth for vegetarian version
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce soy sauce can be an alternative
  • to taste teaspoon Salt adjust according to taste
  • 2 cups Frozen Mixed Vegetables fresh veggies like peas and carrots are also great
Topping
  • 1 bag Frozen Tater Tots or hash browns as a substitute

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat. Add chopped onions and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.
  3. Add 1 pound of ground beef (or lamb) and cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring frequently until browned.
  4. Lower the heat to medium and stir in 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning, 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, and 2 tablespoons of flour. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Slowly pour in 1 cup of beef broth, add 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of salt. Allow the sauce to thicken for about 1 minute.
  6. Stir in 2 cups of frozen mixed vegetables and heat for another 3 minutes until warmed through.
  7. Pour the meat and vegetable mixture into the greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  8. Layer frozen tater tots on top of the meat filling, covering completely.
  9. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
  10. Turn on the broiler for an extra 2-3 minutes to enhance crispiness.
