Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Meringue Trees
  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Ensure mixing bowl and whisk are grease-free; wipe with vinegar if needed.
  3. In a stand mixer, beat egg whites on medium speed until small bubbles form.
  4. Add cream of tartar (if using) and mix until soft peaks form.
  5. Slowly add granulated sugar, continuing to mix until stiff peaks form.
  6. Add vanilla or almond extract and green gel food coloring, mixing until combined.
  7. Prepare a piping bag with an open star tip and color the inside with green gel food coloring.
  8. Pipe meringue into tree shapes on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Sprinkle with nonpareil sprinkles and add star sprinkles if desired.
  10. Bake for 90 minutes, then turn off the oven and leave meringues inside for an additional hour.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
